Pep Guardiola claims there is still "so much" room

What do you give the manager who seemingly has everything? Even more, if you’re Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City may top the Premier League, after burying opponents under another avalanche of goals, but Guardiola can still see room for improvement.

The City boss has warned his players they will lose their place if they fall below the standards he expects.

It says everything about the depth of quality at the manager’s disposal, that he was able to leave in-form Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus on the bench, as an unused sub, and still watch his side coast to victory.

Crystal Palace, without a point or goal all season, did prove obliging opponents, rolling over like puppies in the second-half. But Guardiola is determined to keep his players on their toes, despite their electric start to the new campaign.

“The know it and they feel it,” he said. “They know the players alongside them are all playing well, that’s the best way. You’re not going to have every player playing three games in a row for 11 months, so we need that competition.

“If the next guy is playing good, they have to play good. They have to keep winning. That’s how you get the best performances.

“We need Ilkay Gundogan back to put pressure on Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.

“Danilo at left-back was outstanding, how aggressive he was in defence and attack. So everybody has to push the other ones.
